The TASHRA's Sex Positive Provider Training, led by Zita Nickeson, Ph.D., LMHC, LPC, CST, and Steve Ratcliff, MA, LPCC, LPC, NCC, CST, offers a foundational understanding of sexual health, sex-positive values, and strategies for managing biases in clinical settings. Designed to equip providers with essential knowledge and skills, the training focuses on normalizing conversations around sexuality, increasing bias awareness, and fostering a sex-positive approach in clinical practice.
Key learning objectives include:
- Describing aspects of sexual health.
- Explaining sex-positive values.
- Identifying moments of discomfort when discussing sexual health with clients.
The training emphasizes TASHRA's proficiency levels, particularly the 0.5 Sex Positive Provider level, which includes four domains: Core Concepts, Self-Monitoring & Awareness, Interdisciplinary Collaboration & Ethics, and Clinical Skills. The aim is to build competency in clinicians working with kink-involved populations, starting from Elemental Kink Readiness to Advanced Kink Proficiencies.
Clinicians are encouraged to adopt cultural humility and to shift from pathology-based models to sex-positive frameworks that support sexual well-being. This training provides guidance on how to talk about sex with clients using models like the PLISSIT model, affirming sexual diversity, normalizing sexual variation, and incorporating sex positivity into therapy.
Resources for continued learning and collaboration with sexuality specialists are also highlighted, ensuring that clinicians can provide culturally competent, inclusive, and affirming care.
